The Foundation of Innovation
Patrick Ng's account of moving from inventor to technology commercialisation, and why he concluded that ventures succeed on a deep understanding of the customer's problem rather than on the invention.
Patrick Ng, Venture Creation Instructor & Deep-Tech Mentor
Patrick Ng describes filing his first patent after many failed attempts, then learning that only 5 to 7 percent of patents become products. Moving into technology commercialisation, he found untested technology drew little business interest until he started from the companies' own products and problems, an approach that closed 45 technology transfer deals in four years and produced roughly three times the success of pushing technology at the market.
From evaluating startup pitches he draws a consistent pattern: ventures with a specific customer segment pitch more believably, can quantify their impact, avoid head-on competition with incumbents, and scale faster by working closely with early adopters.
