Overview

Automation on the shop floor increasingly pays for labour redeployment, not headcount cuts

Manufacturing and warehouse operations are automating faster than most feasibility assessments keep pace with. Zebra Technologies' 2023 Warehousing Vision Study, interviewing more than 1,400 decision-makers and associates, found sixty-nine percent had already automated workflows or planned to within the year, yet seventy-six percent of decision-makers still say their facility needs better inventory tooling to get basic accuracy right. On the inspection side, published machine-vision research reports detection accuracy above ninety-eight percent for defects with a stable visual signature, gears, dimensional deviation, but a broader review across automotive, aerospace and general manufacturing found seventy-seven percent of vision-inspection projects stall at prototype or pilot scale rather than reaching production. The technology is rarely the constraint; the feasibility judgment made before it is commissioned usually is.

Why this course

Every system in this course's case walkthrough, the vision line that checks pill packs for a foreign object, the robotic arms that replaced manual carton unboxing, the RFID kiosk that stopped a warehouse team from walking a floor with a clipboard, is one I have personally stood beside while it was being commissioned. I did not learn AI and robotics from a textbook. I learned it from twenty-six years of being the person still on site when a pilot either worked or didn't, and from watching what actually changes for a warehouse or a shop floor when it does.

What I want participants to leave with is not enthusiasm for automation. It is the same feasibility discipline I apply myself before I recommend a single dollar be spent: does this process have a stable enough pattern for a machine to learn, and is the failure mode something we can actually detect. I have seen too many well-funded pilots chase the wrong process because nobody asked that question early enough. This course is my attempt to hand that question to someone else's team before they spend their own budget finding out the hard way.

  • Do we need to bring technical staff, or is this for operations leaders?

    Operations, plant and warehouse leaders are the intended audience, not engineers. The session works through what a process needs to be AI or robotics-ready in plain terms: data available, failure modes, integration points, not code.

  • What should we prepare in advance?

    Bring the process you want assessed: a rough sense of volume, current defect or error rate if you track one, and who owns the process day to day. No documentation prep required.

  • Is this only useful if we already qualify for an EDG grant?

    No. The EDG segment is one block of four, useful if your organisation is Singapore-registered and considering grant-funded delivery, but the feasibility checklist and pilot scoping apply regardless of funding route.

Before you go

I do not have the engineering background to assess a vision-QC system myself, and I mean that as the reason I trust this course rather than a reason to doubt it. Veronica's case walkthrough draws on systems she has actually delivered, not composite examples, which is the same standard I hold every course on this site to.
