Brainstorming Approach: Uncover Great Ideas from Diverse Individuals, Inclusively and Respectfully
How a structured brainstorming session brought a divided startup-challenge team back to a single direction, and the facilitation choices that made it work.
Patrick Ng, Venture Creation Instructor & Deep-Tech Mentor
During the Impact Startup Challenge, a team split into two camps over competing ideas. Patrick Ng describes running a brainstorm that moved them from the customer journey and the industry value chain to a shared idea, freeze-dried cut fruit as a pantry snack, built from both camps' original proposals.
He credits deferred judgement, clarifying questions and the Group Memory technique, working on a physical wall so ideas stay visible and people make eye contact as they pitch. He adds that quiet participants need deliberate care so that everyone owns the outcome.
