Media Entrepreneur, Publisher & AI Strategist

Publisher turned AI strategist, applying two decades of crisis communications experience to how organisations decide under pressure.

Kumaran Pillai is a media entrepreneur, publisher and AI strategist with over two decades of experience in digital media, strategic communications and technology-led business transformation. He is the founder and publisher of The Independent Singapore, one of Singapore's leading independent digital news platforms, where he has shaped public discourse and advanced innovative approaches to journalism in the digital age.

Throughout his career, he has personally managed multiple high-stakes crisis communication situations involving regulators, major institutions and public stakeholders, including engagements with the Media Development Authority (now IMDA), the Malaysian Ministry of Health, NTUC Foodfare and the Tunku Mahkota of Johor. His crisis management approach is rooted in real-world execution: establishing command centres, aligning key stakeholders under pressure, monitoring information flows in real time, and coordinating rapid response strategies to contain escalation and protect institutional credibility. He also played a key strategic role in the 2020 go-to-market campaign of a major political challenger in Singapore, shaping narrative strategy and candidate positioning during a high-intensity election cycle.

In recent years he has focused on applying AI to decision-making, risk detection and communications strategy, helping organisations respond faster and make better decisions in high-pressure environments where speed, trust and judgment matter. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, where his research focuses on AI-assisted decision intelligence for digital publishers.
